Lent and Money

Create in Me a Clean Heart, O God.

Psalm 51 1-3 Generous in love—God, give grace!
Huge in mercy—wipe out my bad record.
Scrub away my guilt,
soak out my sins in your laundry.
I know how bad I’ve been;
my sins are staring me down.  The Message

Today marks the beginning of Lent. It is traditionally a time to exam one’s life without rose colored glasses. This is about a real, hard look. I suggest that this also includes how we look at the place of money and possessions in our lives.  Can we grow as a disciple of Jesus Christ, when money and possessions stand in our way?

Look at your bank statements. Do they tell a story of faith in Jesus Christ, or one of faith in investments and stuff? Biographers often study bank records in order to determine the character of the person they are studying. Imagine someone examining your bank records twenty years from now. What would they learn about your character and your faith in Jesus Christ?

I invite you to use this holy season to examine all that we are and all that we have. Take the time to look at the place of money and possessions. Where do we need forgiveness and a new path?
