Join The Methodist Foundation of Mississippi exploring the Journeys of Paul In

Türkiye and Nicaea

Walk Where Scripture Unfolded

The Methodist Foundation of Mississippi invites you to join us on a journey to some of the holy places you know from Scripture. Scheduled for mid-April 2027, this trip is an opportunity we are excited to share with our partners. We believe this experience will nourish your spirit and offer a deeper understanding of the places and stories that shape our faith.

Reading Scripture takes on new meaning when you can stand in the very places where those stories unfolded. On this journey to Türkiye and Nicaea, you will have the chance to step into the world of the early church, see the landscapes of Paul’s ministry, and experience the settings of familiar biblical passages in a fresh and meaningful way.

Your journey will begin in Istanbul, a city that quite literally bridges continents and cultures. Once known as Constantinople, it has been a crossroads of history and faith for centuries. As you visit places like Hagia Sophia, you will see where generations of believers gathered to worship, pray, and seek God.

From Istanbul, you will travel into the heart of ancient Asia Minor, where the apostle Paul and other early Christians helped shape the Church we know today. In Antioch in Pisidia, you will encounter the setting of Paul’s first recorded sermon (Acts 13), where he boldly proclaimed the story of God’s faithfulness and the good news of Jesus. It is a powerful reminder that the gospel first spread through real communities, in real places, among people not so different from you.

As your journey continues, you will visit cities named in Paul’s letters and in the Book of Revelation. Colossae, Hierapolis, and Laodicea invite us to reflect on messages that still speak to us today: encouragement toward faithfulness, unity, and wholehearted devotion. Walking among the ruins, it will become clear that these were once thriving centers of daily life and spiritual growth.

Ephesus will be one of the most meaningful stops on our journey. Here, Paul taught, discipled, and helped build a strong community of believers (Acts 19). The message of Christ spread from this city to the entire region (Acts 19:10). Ephesus is also remembered in Revelation as a church called to return to its first love (Revelation 2:1–7), a message that continues to invite us all.

Throughout the journey, you will visit several of the Seven Churches of Revelation: Philadelphia, Sardis, Thyatira, Smyrna, Pergamum, and others. Each has its own story of faith, challenge, and perseverance. Their experiences remind us that the Christian life is lived in the balance between culture and conviction, encouragement and correction, hope and endurance.

The journey will conclude with a visit to Nicaea, now called Iznik, where early church leaders gathered to affirm the foundational truths of the Christian faith in the Nicene Creed, a creed still spoken in worship around the world today. This moment in history will help you connect the story of the early church with the beliefs we continue to hold and share today.

This journey offers more than a tour. It is an invitation to deepen your understanding of Scripture, strengthen your faith, and see the biblical story with new perspective. As you walk these ancient paths, you will be reminded that the same God who worked in these places continues to guide and inspire us today.

DAY 1: The Adventure Begins

Your journey begins in Istanbul, where continents meet, and history can be felt in every corner. Empires have risen and fallen here, leaving behind echoes of biblical times. Connecting Europe and Asia, this city has always brought worlds together. Its domes and minarets reflect centuries of faith and change.

For people of faith, Istanbul is not just a stop on the map; it is the stage where pivotal moments in Christianity came to life. The city’s many layers reveal how belief changed with each new empire and culture, making Istanbul a real link to the biblical world.

Istanbul’s richness unfolds in layers of history and culture. Today, almost 450 mosques stand across the city, but when it was called Constantinople, it was the center of the Christian world.

Hagia Sophia is one of Istanbul’s most important biblical sites. Emperor Justinian built it between 532 and 537 AD. For nearly a thousand years, it was the largest church in the Christian world. Hagia Sophia stands as a symbol of how faith and history meet and highlights Christianity’s lasting influence.

Inside, you’ll find architectural wonders like 107 columns supporting its vast structure, white marble floors embedded with ancient fossils, and artistic genius in brilliant glass mosaics reflecting biblical and imperial themes.

Stepping into its vast halls stirs thoughts of the early Church: its rise, its struggles, and the enduring legacy it left behind.

Across the square, the Blue Mosque stands with its six tall minarets and bright interior. Though deeply rooted in Islamic tradition, it also points to the shared history of different faiths and the common desire to worship and honor God.

Together, these landmarks connect the past and present. They show how sacred places still shape spiritual life today.

The Grand Bazaar pulses with life, its 4,000 shops forming a maze of color and sound. As you wander its lively corridors, the air fills with the scents of cinnamon, cloves, and thyme, and you will find yourself immersed in Istanbul’s legacy as a crossroads of trade. In many ways, the bazaar’s busy trade is similar to the ancient world described in Scripture, when cities thrived as hubs of connection, culture, and the spread of faith.

Istanbul’s true significance springs from its unique place between East and West, where ideas, beliefs, and empires have come together for centuries. From the grandeur of Hagia Sophia to the vibrant energy of the Grand Bazaar, Istanbul shows how faith and history endure side by side, sometimes in plain sight, sometimes quietly woven into the city’s spirit.

As your journey starts here, Istanbul sets the rhythm for the days to come. It reminds us that biblical history is not bound to a single place, but is woven through cities, cultures, and the passage of time. At the meeting point of continents, the city encourages us to think about how faith and history have influenced each other over time:

  • Where do we see its legacy today?
  • And how does God’s story keep growing around the world?

The answers are found not only in Istanbul’s monuments, but also in the deeper meanings behind them.

DAY 2: Faith Carved in Stone

Your second day of following in Paul’s footsteps finds you in Cappadocia. A place soaked in sun, carved in stone, and steeped in faith. Every stop on today’s journey provides a glimpse into early belief and profound devotion.

Few places in the world can ignite the imagination and stir the soul like Cappadocia. Nestled in central Türkiye, this extraordinary region is instantly recognizable by its whimsical, cone-shaped rock formations, which rise from the earth like the spires of a dream. From afar, Cappadocia dazzles like a fairy-tale landscape; up close, it unveils the breathtaking story of early Christian faith, perseverance, and sacred refuge- making it one of the most unforgettable destinations on earth.

For many visitors, the adventure can begin with a sunrise balloon ride. This optional adventure provides an unforgettable ascent over valleys dotted with rock cones, as golden light dances across the landscape. From above, Cappadocia feels almost sacred, as if the heavens themselves are reaching down in awe, inviting you to reflect on the wonder below.

Cappadocia’s soft volcanic rock became the unlikely canvas for an astonishing human story. Early believers didn’t just find shelter here- they transformed the landscape, carving entire communities into the earth itself. What began as a natural marvel became a sanctuary, a living testament to ingenuity and devotion. Even today, locals uphold this magical tradition, living in the caves and rock cones, their lives an ongoing chapter in a living legend.

For early Christians, these otherworldly formations offered not just shelter but hope and survival during times of persecution. Hidden within the cliffs, they built churches, homes, and monastic spaces, thereby creating a spiritual stronghold beneath the surface- a place where faith could flourish against all odds. It’s estimated that over 3,000 rock churches lie scattered across Cappadocia, each a silent, awe-inspiring witness to the endurance and triumph of faith.

No visit is complete without experiencing the Rock Chapels of Göreme. Here, sanctuaries carved straight into the stone still shimmer with the remnants of biblical frescoes. Though weathered by time, these paintings are nothing short of miraculous. These vivid scenes from the life of Christ and the early Church are reminders that faith not only survived but flourished here, even in the shadows. Standing inside these chapels, you’re surrounded by walls that once echoed with prayer and praise. The simplicity of the setting will remind you that worship does not depend on grandeur, but on devotion.

Nearby, the Monastic Complex of Zelve reveals how deeply faith shaped daily life. Here, monks lived, prayed, and studied within the rock itself, creating a rhythm of life centered on spiritual discipline and community. The Cave Village of Avcılar further illustrates this integration of sacred and ordinary life. Homes, kitchens, and worship spaces coexist within the same formations, providing an image of faith woven seamlessly into everyday existence.

Perhaps the most astonishing feature of Cappadocia is its underground cities. The Özkonak underground city stretches deep beneath the surface, with tunnels, air shafts, and communal rooms designed to shelter entire populations. Walking through these narrow passageways will deliver a powerful reminder of the early Church’s resilience. In times of danger, believers retreated underground, holding fast to their faith in hidden places. These cities still echo biblical themes of refuge, perseverance, and the steadfastness of God’s people.

What truly sets Cappadocia apart is its vibrancy. This city is no fossilized relic, but a living, breathing world. People still call these caves and cliffs home, and the landscape pulses with the rhythms of daily life.

Cappadocia stands as an extraordinary testament to the early Christian experience. This is where faith was not just spoken but carved and immortalized in stone. It is a breathtaking, lasting expression of trust, courage, and hope that continues to inspire all who witness it. From hidden churches to underground cities, every corner of this landscape tells a story of believers who chose to worship God even when the world around them was uncertain.

Today, those stories invite us to pause and reflect: Where do we find refuge? What does steadfast faith look like in our own lives?

In Cappadocia, the answers are written not on parchment, but in stone.

DAYS 2 & 3

April 12 – Antioch in Pisidia: Where a Message Finds a Community

You’ll start your day in Antioch in Pisidia, a key place for early preaching and the spread of Christian teachings. This stop is more than just a snap shot opportunity. It’s a chance to see how early believers gathered.  Your experience here will show you how ideas moved along trade routes, and how religious life grew in a real historical setting.

You will visit at the Sultanhan Caravanserai, an important stop on the Silk Road from China. This caravanserai served as a crossroads for merchants, pilgrims, and locals, encouraging the exchange of news, languages, and travelers’ adventures. Visiting Sultanhan Caravanserai sets the tone for the day. You will understand how Christianity spread through contact and conversation rather than in isolation.

Arrive in Pisidian Antioch, the site of Paul’s first recorded speech. Paul delivered it in the synagogue among his fellow Jews, recounting the marvels God had done throughout Israel’s history that led to the birth, death, and resurrection of the Savior (Acts 13:14-52). The Jews were outraged by this message, and Paul and Barnabas were expelled from the city. However, before leaving, they shared the Gospel with the Gentiles in Antioch, who were persuaded of its truth and embraced the message of eternal life. These new believers established the first-ever fully Gentile Christian community. Pisidian Antioch stands as both a place of historical resonance and a pivotal site for the formation, inclusion, and early texture of Christian life, showing that early Christian history was shaped by relationships among diverse communities.

April 13 – Colossae, Hierapolis & Laodicea: An Interconnected World of Ruins and Real Faith

The following day will find you submerged in a landscape where splendor and history intertwine with faith: Colossae, Hierapolis, and Laodicea. These three sites, each with its own character, are woven together by ancient roads and spiritual legacy, offering an experience that feels vibrant and alive.

You will begin your day in Colossae, a name famous for Paul’s letters.  This special place is now softened by time and serenity. As you visit the delicate ruins, observe the traces of the theater, the Necropolis, and the Church, you will be able to perceive the rhythm of ancient daily life and feel the devotion of the first believers. Though much is lost to the ravages of time, the essence of the early Christian community echoes in the stones. Imagine the conversations, prayers, and fellowship that once filled these spaces.  Stop and listen closely. You will feel the echoes of Paul’s messages as they were read to the Colossians.

Next comes Hierapolis. It is a city blessed with warm, healing hot springs and some of the best-preserved Roman ruins in Asia Minor. You will walk stone streets and view a grand amphitheater that encourages you to picture the gatherings, celebrations, and stories that have shaped the city into a timeless part of history. Paul greets Epaphras and the believers here in his letter, and you can almost feel their dedication in the air. The marvel of Pamukkale, aka the “Cotton Castle”, awaits you, where mineral-rich waters tumble down white terraces, creating a dreamlike landscape that lingers in memory long after you leave.

Also on today’s agenda is Laodicea. This, once a bustling center of faith and business, is also known as one of the Seven Churches of Revelation. Laodicea’s ruins speak of majesty coupled with a sense of spiritual struggle. See the stadium and columned streets. Remember the warning to be sincere and passionate. We were not called to be lukewarm. As you stand amidst the stones that have seen it all, you’ll sense the living legacy of those early faith communities- imperfect, passionate, and enduring.

Today’s journey is not only about ruins.  It tells a lovely and poignant tale that is faith-layered, beautiful, and deeply human.
