“Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.” Matthew 6:19-21 NLT
Lately, you have heard economists discussing the possibility of our economy sinking into recession. A recession is an economic downturn, typically defined as two consecutive quarters of declining gross domestic product growth. During a recession, unemployment rates increase, wages may stagnate, and people usually have less money to spend. People will start diversifying their investments to recession-proof them against significant losses.
Jesus warns us that if we are not careful, we can develop a “recession-proof” mentality that limits our investing in the Kingdom of God. We will stop sharing words of kindness and compassion. We will become cautious in our relationship building. Finally, we will limit the gifts that we give to the church.
These words that Jesus shares with us say the only defense you have to keep this mentality away is to focus on putting more of your treasures in heaven. There, they will be used to bring others to follow the way of Jesus. It will care for the sick, orphan, widow, and so much more. I pray that we never develop a “recession-proof” mentality but embrace the mindset of abundance.
Journeying Together,
John
