“I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So, don’t be troubled or afraid.” John 14:27 NLT
In John 14, the disciples are troubled by the way Jesus is speaking to them about the future. Something is going to happen to Jesus, but what? He obviously could see that they were anxious and hanging on to every word he said. He then tells them that everything will be ok and that he will leave them with a gift. The gift is peace of mind and heart.
As we watch the news and the actions of our culture around us, the last thing that most of us feel is peace. After all, war is brewing in places around the world, there are acts of hate being cared out by groups of people, and there is a virus that we cannot see, but we have seen the results. This doesn’t set the tone for peace of mind or heart.
Yet, Jesus said this is what you and I need to focus on and what he desires to give us. We must be still and trust that God is neither distant nor turning from our struggles. Our God is working in the midst as he has although history. Amid this turmoil, our job is to remain fixed on the one that has given us new life. It should warm our hearts with this knowledge that our God is in love with and the gift he has given us is peace.
