Following the resurrection and appearances of Jesus in the Gospel of John, we find Peter and a few other disciples out fishing. One can read the text in at least two ways. One way is to witness Peter and the others becoming fishers of people. They are fulfilling the commission Jesus had given them following the resurrection. Or one can read the text in a more literal way in which Peter and the others are going back to being fishermen.
Peter, James, and John were fishermen before Jesus called them out as disciples. And it is not surprising that they go back to what they know best in a time of crisis. The death and now resurrection of Jesus was a world spinning out of control kind of event. The world of literally walking on the road with Jesus no longer existed. So, Peter and the others choose to do what humans do in a time of crisis – going back to doing what we know best.
The problem is that what we know best is not what works in a new reality. We can never recover what was. Oh, I believe the life we had before Covid-19 will return in some ways, but it will never be the same again. We can try to set the clocks back to January 1, 2020, or we can learn to live in a new reality.
