“Precious treasure and oil are in a wise man’s dwelling, but a foolish man devours it.” — Proverbs 21:20 (ESV)
“Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” — 2 Corinthians 9:7 (ESV)
God calls His people to live with both generosity and wisdom. These two qualities — giving and saving — are not in opposition but are part of a balanced life that honors Him.
Giving reflects God’s heart. He is the ultimate Giver, having given us life, salvation, and every good thing we possess. When we give, whether to the church, to those in need, or to causes that advance His Kingdom then we mirror His generosity. Giving shifts our focus from possessions to people, from accumulation to mission. It teaches us trust: trusting that as we release our resources, God will continue to provide for our needs.
Saving, on the other hand, reflects God’s wisdom. The Bible praises the wisdom of planning ahead, storing up for times of need, and exercising self-control. Saving helps protect us and others against future hardships and gives us the freedom to respond generously when opportunities arise. Wise saving is not about hoarding but about stewardship and managing well what God has entrusted to us.
When we embrace both giving and saving, we live open-handedly, recognizing that all we have belongs to God. We honor Him by giving joyfully and saving wisely, walking in faith rather than fear, and always ready to bless others as He leads.
Journeying Together,
John
