“Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.”- Ephesians 4:32
Kindness is a fruit of the Spirit that reflects the heart of God. In Ephesians 4:32, we are instructed to “be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” This verse reminds us that kindness is more than just being nice; it is a reflection of God’s grace and love towards us, extended to others.
The Bible is full of examples of kindness. One of the most striking is found in the story of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37). In this parable, Jesus tells of a man who was beaten, robbed, and left for dead. Several people passed by without helping him, but a Samaritan—a person from a group despised by the Jews—stopped to help. He tended to the man’s wounds, took him to an inn, and paid for his care. The Samaritan’s kindness was not limited by societal boundaries or personal inconvenience; it was an active, selfless expression of love.
Kindness is a powerful tool for breaking down barriers and building relationships. In a world where people are often quick to judge or criticize, a simple act of kindness can make a profound impact. It can open doors to meaningful conversations, heal broken relationships, and even soften hardened hearts. Proverbs 15:1 reminds us, “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” Kindness, expressed in words or actions, has the power to defuse tension and bring peace.
Moreover, kindness is not just about grand gestures; it is often found in the small, everyday acts that show we care. A kind word, a helping hand, or a thoughtful gesture can brighten someone’s day and remind them that they are valued. Jesus Himself modeled this kind of kindness, showing compassion to those who were marginalized and overlooked by society. He healed the sick, fed the hungry, and spent time with those who were rejected by others.
As followers of Christ, we are called to live out this same kindness. Colossians 3:12 urges us to “clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.” This means making kindness a daily practice, allowing it to shape our interactions with others. When we choose to be kind, we reflect the love of God and make His presence known in a world that desperately needs it.
Let us strive to embody the kindness of Christ, knowing that even the smallest act can have an eternal impact.
Journeying Together,
John
