“All the commandments of God he accordingly keeps, and that with all his might. For his obedience is in proportion to his love, the source from whence it flows.”—John Wesley

One of the statements that have always disturbed me is the accusation that there is no difference between the church and the world. The charge is that we have somehow begun to mirror our culture instead of influence it. If this is true, we need to heed the words of Wesley once more and evaluate what steps we need to take to increase our effectiveness and become transformative agents.

Is it possible that we desire a faith that costs us nothing? The Methodist movement began due to a stirring in the hearts of individuals that pressed them to join these holy societies in the pursuit of holiness. They even agreed to a particular discipline and gave up certain worldly customs in this pursuit.

The way of discipleship must cost something, or our whole Christian profession is a farce. We must be stewards that give God what is rightfully His regarding our time, talents, and money. This radical demonstration of love will produce more results because it is driven by a heart of love that desires to be obedient to our Heavenly Father. Through this loving obedience, we will demonstrate to our culture that there is something genuinely different about those who follow the way of Jesus.

Journeying Together,

John
