The Ultimate Gift

“For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16

In 1979, I was five years old, and I will never forget what I asked Santa Claus. It was a Dukes of Hazard race car set. I remember rushing under the tree on that Christmas morning, and there it was, ready for me to put together and allow my imagination to take me to Hazard county. It was a wonderful gift that I can remember after all these years.

John 3:16 probably doesn’t feel like a typical Christmas verse for us to stop and meditate. Yet, as you read, it is the ultimate gift text. Jesus, in his late-night discussion with Nicodemus, shares with him that the greatest gift the world would ever receive was the Son of God. Nicodemus couldn’t understand that he was standing in the very presence of the Savior of us all, and everything in his life would change because of Jesus.

I am sure your tree was packed with presents, and the travel plans and meals were prepared and shared with family. Yet, the greatest gift you will get this year is the one over two thousand years ago that appeared unto us as a child in a manger in Bethlehem and later, as a man dying on a cross to save us all. I hope this has been the best year ever for all of us, and may we remember the gift of Jesus.

Journeying Together,

John
