“Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.”-Matthew 6:19-21

How many times have you either read or heard this text preached? I bet you are saying to yourself, “More than I should have”. Most of the time, we read this text and say, “Okay God, I need to be using all my life to lay up treasures in heaven”. Yet, this text deals with the idea that our hearts will chase our treasures wherever they lead us. This teaching warns us to guard our hearts when it comes to “things” that deter us from fulfilling our call to follow Jesus.

So, let me ask you, what do you truly treasure? At first, I bet we say to ourselves; “I treasure my family, friendships, travel, and even my church”. The truth all too often is something opposite. Where do we prioritize the use of our time? What do we do with most of our wealth? What is the one thing that you can’t live without? Jesus said that these types of questions reveal what we treasure and where our heart is being led.

This is why we are called upon to have a repentant heart that is transformed daily by the grace of Jesus. We must constantly pray for our hearts to be softened and restored by Him. I hope you take a little time today and ponder what you treasure and if what you treasure most can’t be stored in heaven, then ask God to change your heart.
