Pastor Appreciation Month

I Peter 5:1-4 says:

5 “And now, a word to you who are elders in the churches. I, too, am an elder and a witness to the sufferings of Christ. And I, too, will share in his glory when he is revealed to the whole world. As a fellow elder, I appeal to you: 2 Care for the flock that God has entrusted to you. Watch over it willingly, not grudgingly—not for what you will get out of it, but because you are eager to serve God. 3 Don’t lord it over the people assigned to your care, but lead them by your own good example. 4 And when the Great Shepherd appears, you will receive a crown of never-ending glory and honor.”

I had the privilege and challenge for 27 years of being a lead pastor in our conference before being the Foundation’s Executive Director. I have rejoiced at Baptisms, weddings, the birth of children, and so many beautiful experiences from being a minister. I also have had to experience the pain that comes when a member of your congregation has received life-changing news. It does feel at times that you are on a roller coaster.

October for many years has been recognized as “Pastor Appreciation Month.” It is a time to stop and acknowledge not only the current pastor in your church but to remember all those that preceded them and the profound effect they had on your life. I can remember so many who loved me and nurtured my walk with Christ and their investment in me as a gift to me. I hope your life is filled with memories of wonderful pastors as mine is.

Your pastor is with you through all the challenges and changes in life. Let me encourage you to tell your current pastor that you are grateful for their work in your congregation and community. I promise you that everyone needs an uplifting word every once in a while.

I am blessed beyond measure.
