“Freely you have received; freely give.” — Matthew 10:8b (NLT)
In 2024, Americans gave a remarkable $592.5 billion to charity—marking a 6.3% increase over 2023 and a 3.3% rise after adjusting for inflation, the first inflation-adjusted growth in three years. This surge came amid booming stock markets and economic optimism. Individuals alone contributed $392 billion, an 8.2% jump since 2023
What does this overflow of generosity reveal? Just as God’s blessings are richly poured into our lives, giving back with gratitude honors Him. This year’s statistics show not only more giving, but a heart posture: we give when we feel secure, when gratitude wells up in us.
Giving by Sector:
- Public society benefit (e.g., community programs) saw a staggering 16.1% real growth, totaling $66.8 billion
- International affairs grew 14.3% to $35.5 billion, showing care extended far beyond our borders
- Education gifts rose 9.9% real, reaching $88.3 billion, investing in future generations
Yet, religious giving fell 1% after inflation, despite remaining the single largest category at $146.5 billion
God calls us not only to give, but to give relationally—first to His Kingdom and then to our neighbors and the world. This year’s decline in religious giving invites us to consider: Are we neglecting our church and spiritual communities? Jesus taught that feeding His sheep matters (John 21:15–17).
But beyond institutions, God cares about individuals. The rise in giving to public benefit and international causes echoes His global love. When we serve food banks, support refugees, or fund education, we become His hands extended.
Journeying Together,
John
