“Good planning and hard work lead to prosperity, but hasty shortcuts lead to poverty.”— Proverbs 21:5 (NLT)
God cares about every area of our lives—including our finances. In fact, the Bible offers practical wisdom for how we manage money, make plans, and build a secure future. Proverbs 21:5 makes it clear: having a solid financial plan, paired with diligence, leads to blessing.
Financial planning isn’t about greed or hoarding wealth. It’s about stewardship—faithfully managing what God has entrusted to us. Whether you have little or much, God calls you to be wise, intentional, and disciplined with your resources. A good plan includes budgeting, saving, giving, and living within your means.
Planning shows wisdom, but it also shows trust in God’s design. When we take the time to plan, we avoid unnecessary stress and poor decisions. Hasty spending, impulse purchases, or living without a budget may feel easy in the moment, but they often lead to regret and financial strain. That’s why the second part of Proverbs 21:5 warns us that “hasty shortcuts lead to poverty.”
Luke 14:28 (NLT) also reminds us of the value of planning: “But don’t begin until you count the cost.” Jesus used this illustration about building a tower to show that wise people think ahead. The same applies to our finances—planning is not a lack of faith; it’s evidence of godly wisdom.
A strong financial plan also makes space for generosity. When you know where your money is going, you’re better able to give freely, tithe faithfully, and bless others in need. That kind of generosity reflects the heart of God and invites His favor.
If you’ve never made a financial plan or feel overwhelmed, start with prayer. Ask God for wisdom, then take small, faithful steps. Create a budget, set goals, seek wise counsel, and trust that God will provide as you follow His ways.
Journeying Together,
John
