Celebrating the Faithful

by | Nov 6, 2024 | All Saints Sunday

“But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.”~I Peter 2:9 NLT

All Saints’ Day, celebrated on November 1st, is a day set aside to honor the lives of those who have faithfully followed Christ and are now with Him in glory. It is a time to reflect on the “great cloud of witnesses” mentioned in Hebrews 12:1, those believers throughout history who have lived lives of faith, endured trials, and finished their race with perseverance. On this day, we remember the saints—not just the famous heroes of the faith, but all Christians who have gone before us, including those we have known personally.

The concept of sainthood is not limited to extraordinary acts of faith or miracles; rather, it encompasses all who are united with Christ. In 1 Peter 2:9, we are reminded, “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s very own possession” This passage shows us that, as believers, we are all part of God’s holy people—His saints. All Saints’ Day is a reminder that sainthood is not about perfection, but about God’s grace and our identity in Christ.

The lives of the saints serve as encouragement for us. They remind us that ordinary people, empowered by the Holy Spirit, can do extraordinary things for God’s kingdom. Whether they endured persecution, spread the gospel, or quietly lived out their faith in everyday acts of love and service, their lives point us to Jesus, the ultimate example of faithfulness. Their legacy calls us to run our race with perseverance, keeping our eyes fixed on Christ (Hebrews 12:2).

As we remember the saints, All Saints’ Day is also a time to reflect on our own spiritual journey. What legacy of faith are we leaving behind? How are we living out our calling as God’s people? Jesus calls us to be “the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14), shining His love and truth in a world that so desperately needs it. The saints who have gone before us showed us how to live in such a way, and now it is our turn to carry that light forward.

Let All Saints’ Day remind us that we are part of a much larger story. We are connected to generations of believers who have faithfully served Christ, and we are invited to join them in proclaiming the hope and glory of His kingdom. May their example inspire us to live fully for God, knowing that we, too, will one day stand with the saints in heaven, worshiping Him for all eternity.

Journeying Together,

John
