“You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. ‘For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.’”— 2 Corinthians 9:7 (NLT)
In our fast-paced world, much of our giving tends to be spontaneous and reactive to needs we see or causes we hear about. While there’s beauty in generosity that responds in the moment, there’s also deep spiritual value in planned giving. This is intentional, prayerful generosity that reflects both trust in God’s provision and a desire to make an eternal impact.
Planned giving starts with a decision that comes from the heart. As Paul wrote to the Corinthians, “You must each decide in your heart how much to give.” This implies reflection, prayer, and purposeful intention. It’s not about guilt or social pressure; it’s about aligning our finances with our faith.
When we plan our giving, whether through budgeting a monthly tithe, setting up a recurring gift to a ministry, or including the church in our estate planning—we declare that God is the true owner of all we have. Planning allows our giving to become a discipline, not just a reaction. It also ensures we don’t forget generosity in the busyness of life.
Consider how God gives: with thought, purpose, and perfect timing. When we give in a planned, faithful way, we reflect His nature. And we open the door for greater impact. Strategic, consistent giving allows ministries to plan, grow, and reach more people with the gospel.
Jesus praised the widow who gave two small coins—not for the amount, but for the sacrifice and heart behind it (Luke 21:1–4). Planned giving is not about wealth; it’s about willingness. When we plan our giving, we say, “Lord, I trust You with every part of my life and this includes my finances.”
