“I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So, don’t be troubled or afraid.”- John 14:27 NLT
Peace is something we all long for, yet it often feels elusive in a world filled with conflict, stress, and uncertainty. The Bible, however, offers a different perspective on peace—one that is not dependent on external circumstances but rooted in the very presence and promises of God. True peace, or “shalom” in Hebrew, is more than just the absence of conflict; it is the presence of wholeness, harmony, and well-being that only comes from God.
In John 14:27, Jesus tells His disciples, “I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So, don’t be troubled or afraid.” The peace that Jesus offers is not a temporary feeling or a fleeting emotion, but a deep and abiding sense of security in Him. It transcends the troubles of this world and is grounded in the assurance of His love, protection, and eternal promises.
One of the most comforting scriptures on peace is found in Philippians 4:6-7, where Paul writes, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” This passage reminds us that peace is not the absence of problems, but the presence of God in the midst of them. When we bring our anxieties and burdens to God in prayer, He promises to replace our worry with a peace that surpasses human understanding.
Isaiah 26:3 tells us, “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.” The key to experiencing lasting peace is to fix our minds on God, trusting in His goodness and sovereignty. This kind of peace is not found by controlling our circumstances but by surrendering them to God and trusting in His greater plan.
As we seek peace, it’s important to remember that we are also called to be peacemakers. In Matthew 5:9, Jesus says, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” As we experience the peace of Christ in our own hearts, we are invited to share that peace with others by promoting reconciliation, forgiveness, and love in our relationships and communities.
Today, let the peace of Christ rule in your heart. Bring your anxieties and burdens to Him, trusting in His faithful care. As you experience His peace, be a light that spreads that peace to a world that so desperately needs it.
Journeying Together,
John
