“Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.”- Matthew 6:21 NLT
Intentional giving is an act of faith and worship, aligning our hearts with God’s purposes. It goes beyond meeting obligations or responding to momentary feelings of generosity. It’s about deliberately choosing to honor God with what He has entrusted to us—our time, talents, and resources.
Scripture is filled with examples of intentional giving. In 2 Corinthians 9:7, Paul writes, “Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” This verse emphasizes the importance of thoughtfulness and joy in our giving. God isn’t interested in the size of our gift but in the posture of our hearts.
The widow in Mark 12:41-44 exemplifies this beautifully. Though her offering was small, it was given sacrificially and with a pure heart. Jesus commended her not for the amount she gave but for the spirit in which she gave it—fully trusting God to provide.
Intentional giving requires us to recognize that everything we have comes from God (Psalm 24:1). When we give, we acknowledge His provision and our dependence on Him. It also calls us to prioritize His kingdom over our own desires. This might mean supporting ministries, meeting the needs of the poor, or investing in people’s lives through acts of kindness and service.
To give intentionally, we must start by seeking God’s guidance. Prayerfully ask Him where and how He wants you to give. Then, take practical steps to align your giving with His direction. This could involve setting aside a portion of your income, creating a budget that reflects kingdom priorities, or committing to serve regularly in a specific ministry.
Intentional giving transforms us. It shifts our focus from material things to eternal treasures. It deepens our trust in God’s provision and opens our hearts to His joy. In giving, we become more like Jesus, who gave Himself fully for us.
As you reflect on your giving, ask yourself: Am I giving out of routine, or am I giving intentionally and with joy? How can I reflect God’s generous heart in my daily life? This week, choose to give with purpose, and experience the blessings of partnering with God’s work in the world.

John
