Stepping Out in Faith

“Yes, come,” Jesus said. So, Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw the strong wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. “Save me, Lord!” he shouted. -Matthew 14:29-30

Taking risks is an unavoidable part of life. Whether it’s starting a new job, building a relationship, or pursuing a dream, we face moments when we must step out of our comfort zones. These moments often come with uncertainty, fear, and the potential for failure. Yet, risk is also a vital aspect of faith. In fact, the Bible is full of stories where people took great risks because they trusted God’s plan over their own comfort.

One of the clearest examples of this is Peter’s decision to step out of the boat and walk on water. In Matthew 14:29-30, when Jesus tells Peter to “Come,” Peter steps out into the stormy sea. At first, he walks on water, but when he becomes afraid of the wind and waves, he begins to sink. It was a risk for Peter to leave the safety of the boat, but it was also an act of incredible faith. Peter’s initial success, followed by his moment of doubt, reflects the reality that stepping out in faith doesn’t always mean everything will go smoothly.

Taking risks for God doesn’t guarantee immediate success, but it does mean trusting Him with the outcome. Proverbs 3:5-6 encourages us to “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” This passage reminds us that the risk of stepping out is not about our own ability but about trusting in God’s direction.

It’s easy to avoid risk, seeking safety in the familiar. But God often calls us to take bold steps, trusting Him even when the path ahead is unclear. Abraham is another powerful example of this. In Genesis 12, God calls Abraham to leave his homeland and go to a land He will show him. Abraham risks everything—his security, his home, and his future—because he trusts that God’s promise is greater than his fear of the unknown.

In our own lives, we may be called to take risks for the sake of the gospel, for our families, or in our personal callings. These risks might involve standing up for our faith, making sacrifices, or pursuing God’s calling in a way that seems daunting. But like Peter, when we take the step, we’re not alone. God is with us.

What risks is God asking you to take today? Trust that He is faithful, and step out in faith, knowing that His purposes are greater than any fear or uncertainty you may face.

John
